Children have the uncanny ability to fall sick or get injured outside of normal “office hours” and parents are then faced with the dilemma of where to take them. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises that, in cases like these, the pediatrician’s office should be the first call made, even if the office is closed. Pediatricians often take calls out of hours and if they are unable to see you but believe your child should be seen by a doctor, they will advise you on the most appropriate place for your child to receive care and how quickly they should be seen.
Urgent care centers are becoming increasingly popular as the “mid-point” between the doctor’s office and the emergency room, but keep in mind that the physicans and nurses that work there may not have advanced training in dealing with children and may not be comfortable treating infants and young children. This is where pediatric urgent care centers come in.
Pediatric urgent care is an urgent care center that treats only children, usually up to the age of 21. Before visiting an urgent care that claims to treat pediatrics, call ahead and verify that they treat patients in your child’s age range.

As in regular ‘urgent care vs emergency care’ scenarios, the nature of the illness or injury of the child will largely depend on where you take them. Broadly speaking, urgent care is appropriate for an urgent (that can’t wait for a normal doctor’s office appointment) but not life-threatening case; whereas the emergency room is best equipped to deal with more complex and life-threatening situations. That being said, you should always choose the setting that is going to best serve the needs of the child. For example, a fever is always considered an emergency in infants under 2 months of age, but it’s less of a worry in toddlers or children.
